Yoga therapy is gaining popularity and new scientific evidence supports its efficacy.
Part of the ancient yoga tradition and Ayurveda system of health care, yoga therapy has now become established as a complementary treatment for mental and physical health issues but can also serve as a form of prevention and maintenance. Navutu Dreams Resort & Wellness Retreat is glad to offer you an addition to our wellness offers: “Yoga Therapy with Irene”. These one-on-one sessions aim to help individuals with specific health needs through the application of yoga techniques and principles. Let our wellness expert and Yoga Therapist Irene Laviña develop a personal yoga therapy program for you
What Is Yoga Therapy?
Yoga therapy addresses issues of healing on the many levels of the human body, mind, and spirit. After appropriate intake and assessment, the therapist will focus on the specific symptoms that trouble the client and identify methods to help them manage those symptoms. In addition, the therapist’s role is to empower clients to take a more active role in their self-care. Modalities of yoga therapy and self-care include asanas (poses), meditation, pranayama (breath work), yoga nidra (deep guided relaxation), diet and lifestyle modification, chanting, daily yogic detoxification habits (such as neti, tratak, oil pulling, oil abhyanga massage, etc).
Conditions Commonly Addressed in Yoga Therapy Sessions:
- Muscuskeletal issues such as yoga-related injuries (rotator cuff injuries, L4/L5 disc herniation, SI joint dysfunction, meniscus injuries) and lifestyle-related shoulder and back pain (“text neck”, desk job damage) degenerative disorders
- Chronic illnesses and symptoms of metabolic disorders (diabetes, hypertension, obesity, etc); autoimmune disorders
- Nervous system disorders and somatic issues such as burnout syndrome, anxiety, depression, stress, PTSD, insomnia
- Rehabilitation
- Women’s health, healthy aging
Yoga therapy is the adaptation of yoga practices for people with health challenges. Yoga therapists prescribe specific regimens of postures, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques to suit individual needs. Medical research shows that Yoga therapy is among the most effective complementary therapies for several common ailments. The challenges may be an illness, a temporary condition like pregnancy or childbirth, or a chronic condition associated with old age or infirmity.
