Remarkable Siem Reap Attractions

Once voted as the top tourist destination in the world with Angkor Wat as its main draw, this little temple town is a lot more beyond just the spectacular Angkor ruins. Millions of tourists flock to Siem Reap every year to experience the grandeur of the temples; but once you have seen the temple complex, what else is there to explore? Here is our round-up of the top Siem Reap attractions beyond the Angkor temples.

1. Kampong Phluk (A Small Floating Village on the Great Tonlé Sap Lake)

One of the remarkable highlights of your visit to Siem Reap is a trip out to the floating villages. Just about an hour drive from Siem Reap town is a relatively small village of Kampong Phluk of the Great Tonlé Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake. There you will go through an authentic Cambodian village experience where you can see wooden houses that are built on sturdy stilts and get an insight into the submerged forest and lakeside village life.

2. Boeung Peariang (Siem Reap Bird Sanctuary)

Head to the beautiful community of Chreav located just few minutes away from the city center and spend an afternoon at the Boeung Peariang Bird Sanctuary. It is a real treat for those who are into wildlife adventures and those who wish to experience the amazing Cambodian wildlife. This hunting ground turned a bird reserve is home to about 170 endangered species of waterbirds. The bird watching experience begins with an introduction to the avian sanctuary and a walk through the village of Chreav. Visitors will then board on an engine boat and rove around the lake to see the rare species of waterbirds, roaming freely around their natural habitat.

3. Phnom Kulen Mountain (Cambodia’s Sacred Peak)

Nature lovers as well as adventure seekers will surely love a visit to this place. Located about 48 km (a 2 hour drive) from the provincial town of Siem Reap, lies the most sacred peak in all of Cambodia, Phnom Kulen. Kulen Mountain offers stunning forest and jungle views, a massive reclining Buddha atop the mountain – one of the biggest of its kind in the kingdom, magical waterfalls which are a perfect spot to cool off with a refreshing dip and the River of a 1000 Lingas which features intricate carvings of sacred lingas on the river banks. This is a great adventure for nature-trippers who want to get a taste of Siem Reap’s natural beauty.

4. Perng Tanorn (Iconic Sandstone Site)

Situated northwest of Siem Reap town, is a beautiful sandstone site of Perng Tanorn. This natural wonder is the only sandstone site ever recorded in Cambodia thus far which features enormous sandstone formations and heavily textured rocks dispersed around the hilltop. Read more about our feature on Perng Tanorn here..

5. Phare, The Cambodian Circus

Undeniably, this has become Siem Reap’s ‘a must -see attraction’. Many visiting tourists who have seen one or two of the nightly performances at Phare, The Cambodian Circus consider the experience as one of the highlights of their visit to Cambodia. The performances combine music, dance, drama, acrobatics, juggling, contortion and aerial acts that tell uniquely Cambodian stories. The hour-long shows are surely not to be missed out.

6. The Angkor Night Market

The Angkor Night Market, referred to as ‘the original night market’ is located just off Sivutha Road. Here you can find souvenirs such as beautiful silk scarves, ‘I Love Cambodia’ shirts, hand-made woven bags, baskets, hats, statues, art pieces, decors and many other hand-crafted items. It is a ‘shop til you drop’ experience! Make sure to get a massage treatment at one of the spas around after your shopping agenda.
