Mozart at Angkor
Taking place in December 2018, Cambodia’s first-ever production of a Western classical opera, The Cambodian Magic Flute is set to be played out at the 12th century Chau Say Tevoda temple within the Angkor Archaeological Park.
Mozart at Angkor is a three-year project instigated by Robert Turnbull, a journalist, producer and a long-term resident of Cambodia whose dream is to create an opera at the UNESCO inscribed World Heritage Site of Angkor, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. The project involves establishing an ensemble through auditions and a series of workshops under the guidance of Italian Opera Masters, Stefano Vizioli and Aaron Carpene, bringing together international and local professional and opera singers. In cooperation with Amrita Performing Arts, the project will be showcasing “The Cambodian Magic Flute’ which is a watershed adaptation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”.The opera will be a fusion of local and western musical, dance and theatrical traditions which will draw together unique operatic performances.
More About the Magic Flute
The Magic Flute is a fairy tale, with themes of love and of good versus evil. It is a story about Tamino who conquers everything for the love of his life, Pamina. The two face the trials of water and fire and with the aid of a magic flute, they are triumphant.
Prelude to Cambodia’s Version of the Magic Flute
Prior to the final performance, there will be two preliminary events to introduce this highly regarded opera in Angkor in 2018 and one of which will be held here at Navutu Dreams. In the evening of April 3rd, Singapore-born and Italy-based Martin Ng, one of Asia’s top baritones and billed to play ‘Papageno’ for the Cambodian Magic Flute, will be singing some beautiful arias on piano accompaniment. The program will be a 60 minute performance with a 20 minute intervals.
This is an introductory event to support the final staging of Mozart at Angkor in 2018. The performance is scheduled to start at 6:30pm – 7:45pm. The admission is priced at US$25.00 net per person which includes canapes and a glass of sparkling cocktail. Those who would be interested in meeting Martin and Robert of Mozart at Angkor are encouraged to join for the post-show cocktail buffet at our rooftop terrace featuring an hour of free flow of house pours and hors d’eouvres on buffet priced at US$45.00 net per person. Winemakers Banfi from Tuscany, Purato from Sicily and Maison Castel from France are supporting the event through Celliers d’Asie, Cambodia’s oldest importer of wines and spirits.
